Besides La Union and Mixteca—who serve primarily the Mexican immigrant community of Sunset Park, Park Slope and Bay Ridge, there are also other organizations that work with such populations like the Center for Family Life and Turning Point. If what this forum is trying to do is to educate parents, the family and community in general, I think that Mr. Pinto should reconsider his and the 72nd precinct’s strategies. As we are thankful for their efforts, I strongly believe that there is substantial knowledge that we as community organizers and leaders have that the NYPD lack about the Mexican gang culture and the Mexican community in general in Sunset Park and NY. I can say this with pride because we work with a great youth group that is made up of primarily of Mexican and Mexican-American members who are working hard for social change. On-line resources are a quiet and hidden way for people to get information they want and need. Unfortunately, the parents often don't have the access or know-how to access it. Both the Rec Center and Library have access to computers and classes that are FREE. There are adult only hours at the Rec Center, and bi-lingual staff are happy to help.
