We talked a while ago about Borough President Marty Markowitz’s vision for a better, brighter Fourth Avenue. This morning, you can get a preview of what that might look like. The collaboration with students from NYU’s Wagner School show green medians, bike racks and remarkably traffic-free streets. Some of those commenting on Curbed seemed skeptical. Thoughts?

I’m envisioning people getting killed… 4th avenue is always so busy with traffic. Making the medians greener would be beautiful and would make 4th avenue so much prettier. Enlarging the medians for pedestrians to sit would not only be dangerous but it would also clog the traffic ways. This would have to be a very carefully thought out in order for it to be successful. I hope that they get it right and that it doesn’t cost too much money!

While expanding the center median to incorporate green space is a nice idea (as I understand it you cannot plant on the center median itself as it is hollow)the decrease in the number of traffic lanes will make for a horrible rush hour. As it is, even with three lanes there are so many double parked cars and trucks that traffic crawls. Unless this plan addresses this issue either through enforcement or strict parking regulations, the runoff of cars to 5th or 3rd ave will create a nightmare.

I love all the new trees that have been planted in sunset park and look forward to a more beautiful less industrial looking neighborhood.

Don’t believe the hype!! I’ve lived in this area since I was 1 1/2 years old now I’m 41, do the math. I LOVE this hood no place like it, where else can you get a torta from an authentic Mexican bakery at 2 a.m. or walk a few blocks & have great dim sum. I work in the real estate industry Sunset is considered up & coming…Do you honestly think they are going to make Sunset look this pretty for us?! By the time this plan comes to fruition we won’t be here…This is for the hipster who slowly but surely will be taking over the neighborhood…gentrification is no joke!!! The smells & local flavor will be gone…look at Redhook, Williamsburg & Slope to name a few…we’re next it’s only a matter of time…
